Is Horizon Triathlon Coaching for Triathlon training only?
Whilst we specialize in Triathlon Coaching, we can offer training for individual disciplines including swimming, cycling, and running. For example, we can coach you to run your first 5km trail race.
I'm new to the Triathlon world, can you coach me?
Absolutely, YES! We train athletes of all fitness levels and experience levels. We love to help athletes participate in their first Triathlon.
I've raced a few Triathlons, and I'm hooked, but I can't seem to improve my race results. How can you help me?
It’s great to hear that you’re enjoying triathlon. We work with you to understand your work/life balance. From there we develop a personal, individualized plan for you through tried and tested training principles. Our training principles allow for manageable and achievable growth, whilst keeping training challenging and enjoyable. We monitor your progress regularly by testing across disciplines and from there we set micro goals within the larger training plan.
Is Training Peaks™ free? And will it sync with my sports watch?
Training Peaks™ offers two “versions” of its service. I recommend starting with the basic (free) version and thereafter evaluating whether the premium ($9.99) offers value to the athlete. Training peaks sync with most sports watches, including Garmin, Polar, Suunto, Wahoo, and Apple Watch. You can find more information here: https://www.trainingpeaks.com/upload/
What are the essentials I'll need to take up Triathlon?
Triathlon is a fairly equipment-heavy sport and prices for equipment vary depending on your budget. But the essentials are:
Swim: A fitted swimming costume (no baggies/boardshorts), swim goggles, and a swim cap. If you plan on doing much open water training then consider a wetsuit.
Bike: You can train on a road bike or invest in a time trial bike, a helmet, cycling shoes with cleats, padded cycling shorts/bib, and a jersey.
Run: If you can invest in a good pair (comfortable) of running shoes this will be great. Be sure to wear socks that are comfortable when you're wearing your running shoes.
You can also invest in a tri-suit; this means you're wearing the same sporting clothes throughout your race.
Are you able to give advice on the best equipment to invest in which will suit my experience and budget?
Most definitely, we are happy to chat with you regarding the options available across all levels of experience and differing budget options. Having a tight budget doesn't mean you won't achieve your race goals.
What happens once I sign up for your personalized program?
Firstly, we will set up a free consultation video/voice call with you to discuss where currently are on your training journey and what your goals are. You'll then need to decide whether you want to sign up, and if you do, then you'll need to make payment. Thereafter you’ll complete the new athlete questionnaire. Following these interactions and payment, your plan will be developed and presented to you and the training will commence. Contact with your coach will continue throughout your program and you’ll receive continuous feedback, guidance, and analysis of your training.
How often will my coach and I be in communication?
We're with you every step of the way - you will have unlimited access to your coach.
Where are you based? Do you offer in-person training?
Whilst our physical location is in Hertfordshire, UK, Horizon Triathlon Coaching is an online coaching platform, and therefore we're available to anyone, anywhere in the world who wants to train with us. We are available for WhatsApp video or phone calls and we offer in-person training to those who live in Hertfordshire.
What experience do you have coaching Triathlon?
Head coach Mike Redington has been coaching triathlon for over 8 years, having trained over 300 athletes to 70.3 (half Ironman) finishes, and over 120 athletes to full Ironman finishes. Over 50 of these athletes have qualified for World Championship events since beginning training with us. Mike has also coached multiple athletes across various other distances with some representing their countries at ITU World Champs and Xtrerra World Champs.
Where should I look for races to partake in and what races would you suggest?
There are many races across all continents that are worthwhile considering, brands such as Ironman, Challenge, Xterra, ITU, and XTri series offer great appeal value and are renowned for offering great experiences to athletes. Thereafter each country will have race organizers offering excellent race options that may attract smaller fields which often leads to a unique offering with smaller fields that can be great for newer athletes. Get in touch and let’s explore the options that are available in your region.
